Advanced Edition

Hard-Disk Cloning and Disaster-Recovery with ImageCopy Advanced Edition

The ImageCopy Advanced Edition provides, in addition to the facilities of the Standard Edition a number of additional features for the professional. For a description of the functionality of the disk to disk copying and the size-matching of FAT and FAT32 partitions, please see the Standard Edition. A tabular comparison of the various editions can be found in our Product overview.

Compressed image files

Whether for the perfect and absolutely secure data security or for saving hard disk images, for subsequently generating additional disks: ImageCopy Advanced Edition is the first choice for all these and similar tasks. Simply specify, as the target medium, a file which can exist on all the addressible media, e.g. networks, Zip- or Jaz-drives as a file and start the copying as usual. In a very short time, you will get a well comPress Informationd - and, if desired, password protected - image file, which you can, of course, also burn on a CD-ROM. The size of image files is then about 50% of the space occupied by the original disk; image files can be distributed into several parts. If the space on the target medium is over, simply continue on a new medium or on another network drive. The size of the image files can be limited so that, for example, very large systems have several image files which can be burnt on separate CD-ROM's. Even when copying to image files, our Advanced Edition is extremely fast: a throughput of up to more than 200 MB per minute (!) can quite easily reached in fast systems.

The restoration - this can be done just as simply and fast as the generation - of the image files can naturally also be done without user inputs in (batch mode), the program automatically combines all the image files belonging to a "Volume Set" again into a hard disk which is immediately bootable.

Enhanced copy facilities

Various differently adjustable copying modes provide a certain flexibility which has not been achieved so far:
  • The All Sectors Mode is particularly suitable for copying partitions which are already faulty and also permits, for example, an undelete operation on the copied hard disk, since all the sectors are again available in their original position.
  • The File Copy Mode copies all the files on the hard disk just like XCOPY, in which, however, all attributes and long file names are copied 1:1. If the Verify switch is set on, then, if there are faulty sectors, another position is automatically selected on the target disk and the bad cluster is marked accordingly.
  • Sector Optimized Mode: This is the fastest copying mode that is possible: the program generates a list of the sectors used, and copies only these occupied sectors in ascending order to the target disk. A complete Windows 95 installation be copied in just 30 seconds on a suitably fizzy computer and hard disk! If this copying mode is selected, however, no reductions of the partitions are possible, and enlargements can only be carried out if the cluster size remains the same.
  • Automatic Mode: The best of both worlds: This mode automatically selects the fastest possible selects, depending on the partition mode, depending on the partition size.
  • Raw Copy Mode: This mode copies the entire disk, bit by bit, without making any changes or adjustments and is thus also suitable for copying "exotic" operating systems.

ImageCopy Advanced Edition can also copy hard disks which are already faulty: if a faulty block is detected, the program automatically switches into the "Single Sector Copy Mode", and tries to carry out a certain number of read-retries (this number can be set), in order to try and copy as much data as possible from the original hard disk. A corresponding report of the faults detected can be viewed simultaneously during the copying, or in a log file at a later time.

Command line and batch mode

All the options which can be invoked by direct input or using the mouse can be selected from the command line. In addition, can be fully automated by the batch facility. Thus, for example, the restore of an image files to a new hard disk is possible by inserting the ImageCopy diskette and the "self-burned" CD-R and simply switching on the PC. You can thus completely automate the entire installation of a computer. We have even thought of the booting, with many large drivers from the diskette (network access): we also ship a utility program with all shipments, using which you can extend your AUTOEXEC.BAT file across several diskettes(!).
